It was founded in 1557 by the banker to the King of Poland for his son Moj\u017cesz ben Israel Isserles, known as The Rema<sup>2<\/sup>. The inscription above the gate on Szeroka Street announces this to the visitor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u05d1\u05d9\u05ea \u05d4\u05db\u05e0\u05e1\u05ea \u05d7\u05d3\u05e9 \u05e8\u05de\u05d0 \u05d6\u05e6\u05dc<\/strong><br><sup>New Synagogue of Rema, of Blessed Memory<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1988, during restoration works, polychromes were discovered. In the prayer room, a chair near the eastern wall is, according to tradition, that of the Rema. The holy ark, a work of the late Renaissance, is framed by pillars and overlooked by the Tables of the Law. The alms trunk at the entrance to the prayer hall bears the inscription <strong>\u201cgold, silver, copper\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Exodus 25, 3<br><\/strong> \u05d5\u05b0\u05d6\u05b9\u05d0\u05ea \u05d4\u05b7\u05ea\u05b0\u05bc\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8 \u05d0\u05b2\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc \u05de\u05b5\u05d0\u05b4\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05dd <strong>\u05d6\u05b8\u05d4\u05b8\u05d1 \u05d5\u05b8\u05db\u05b6\u05e1\u05b6\u05e3 \u05d5\u05bc\u05e0\u05b0\u05d7\u05b9\u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05ea<\/strong><br>and here is the &lsquo; offering you will receive from them:<br><strong>gold, silver and copper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The walls of the courtyard bear inscriptions in memory of the Jews of Krakow who perished in the Holocaust. In 1945, the synagogue once again became a place of prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em><sup>1<\/sup> The movie Schindler&rsquo;s Listwas filmed in &nbsp;1993&nbsp;in this neighborhood .<\/em><br><em><sup>2<\/sup> <\/em><em>Rem\u00a0\u00bba (\u05e8\u05de\u05f4\u05d0)<\/em> <em>is the acronym of Rabbi Moses Isserles (1520-1572), author of religious, philosophical, scientific and mystical works.
