Chronicles and the Book of Kings describe the conquest of the Northern Kingdom by the monarchs of Assyria, Tiglat-Pilesser III (\u05ea\u05d2\u05dc\u05ea \u05e4\u05dc\u05d0\u05e1\u05e8)1<\/sup> and Shalmaneser V (\u05e9\u05dc\u05de\u05e0\u05d0\u05e1\u05e8)2<\/sup>. The latter, in 722 BCE, took people of Israel into exile:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>The king of Assyria took Israel into exile in the land of Assyria; he transported him to Halah, to the Haber, the river of Gozan, and to the towns of Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of many cases of forced deportations implemented by the Assyrian Empire, during which many thousands of Jews were exiled to Assyria.
Based on the size and importance of Hamad\u0101n as a royal city or capital of the Medes, Vladimir Lukonin<\/strong>3<\/sup> thinks it reasonable to assume that many of these Jews settled there, making the Jewish community of Hamad\u0101n the oldest outside of Israel4<\/sup>.
Benjamin of Tudela<\/strong>5<\/sup> in his Sefer Massa’ot<\/strong><\/em> (\u05de\u05e1\u05e2\u05d5\u05ea \u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 – Travel Book) recounts his visit to Hamad\u0101n. He estimates the city’s Jewish population at 50,000 and describes the tomb of Esther and Mordecai.
Sh\u0101hin of Shiraz<\/strong>6<\/sup>, a 14th century Persian Jewish poet, recounts, among other stories, in his epic poem Ardashir-N\u0101mah<\/em><\/strong>7<\/sup>, the journey of Queen Esther and Mordechai to Hamad\u0101n, where they are said to have died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warning<\/strong>: even if it is allowed to drink8<\/sup> more than usual on Purim, avoid drinking a salmanazar (9-liter bottle) or a nebuchadnezzar (15 liters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
