Built between 1884 and 1886 in a Neo-Byzantine style, the building stands out for its symmetrical composition, rounded arches, Hebrew inscriptions, and stone gables carved to represent the Torah scrolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure was designed by architect <strong>Alfred-Philibert Aldrophe<\/strong><sup>[2]<\/sup>, a major figure in Jewish religious architecture in France at the end of the 19th century. Its realization was made possible thanks to the financial support of philanthropist<strong> C\u00e9cile Furtado-Heine<\/strong><sup>[3]<\/sup>, during a time marked by the massive arrival of Alsatian and Lorraine Jewish families after the <strong>1870 war<\/strong><sup>[4]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listed as a historic monument since 2010, the synagogue remains an active place of worship, serving a predominantly Sephardic community. Before its construction, the Jews of Versailles, present since the 18th century, practiced their faith in modest prayer rooms, notably on Rue de Saint-Cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em><strong><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/strong> The <strong>inscription <\/strong>above the rose window combines two verses:<\/em><br>\u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4\u05b7\u05d1\u05b0\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc \u05d0\u05b5\u05ea \u05d4&rsquo; \u05d0\u05b1\u05dc\u05b9\u05d4\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 <em>You shall love the Lord, your God<\/em> (Deuteronomy 6:5).<br>\u05dc\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05e2\u05b2\u05da\u05b8 \u05db\u05b8\u05bc\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05da\u05b8 <em>You shall love your neighbor as yourself<\/em> (Leviticus 19:18).<br><em>Above the central portal, another verse is inscribed:<\/em><br><em>\u00ab\u00a0Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> (Deuteronomy 28:6).<br><em><strong><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/strong> <strong>Alfred-Philibert Aldrophe <\/strong>(1834\u20131895), French architect, is notably the designer of the synagogue on Rue de la Victoire in Paris, a landmark of French Judaism.<\/em><br><em><strong><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/strong> <strong>C\u00e9cile Charlotte Furtado-Heine<\/strong> (1821\u20131896), a major Jewish patron, supported numerous social and religious initiatives, including the construction of hospitals and synagogues.<\/em><br><em><strong><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/strong> After the <strong>defeat of Napoleon III at Sedan<\/strong>, the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine by the German Empire in 1871 led to the exile of many French-speaking Jewish families. Some sought refuge in France and Algeria, while others settled in Switzerland or the United States, particularly in Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and New York.
