It is preserved in the ketubot collection of the <strong>Jewish Museum in New York<\/strong><sup> [3]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within its lavish decoration, we find at the top of the frame an iconographic representation of the Jewish people <sup>[4]<\/sup>, featuring a lion holding a censer. Below appear the figures of Fame and Profit <sup>[5]<\/sup>, symbols of renown and prosperity. Next comes a complete <strong>zodiac <\/strong><sup>[6]<\/sup>. Medallions depicting biblical scenes, surrounded by carefully chosen <strong>verses <\/strong><sup>[7]<\/sup>, frame the ketubah text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em><sup>[1]<\/sup> Ink, gouache, and gold leaf on parchment, 83 \u00d7 58.3 cm. Inventory number: F 2407.<\/em><br><em><sup>[2] <\/sup><strong>Tuscan Baroque <\/strong>is characterized by abundant ornamentation, dynamic compositions, and allegorical figures.<\/em><br><em><sup>[3]<\/sup> The <strong>Jewish Museum in New York<\/strong> holds one of the world\u2019s most important ketubah collections. The Siena ketubah is considered an exceptional model for its refinement and iconography.<\/em><br><em><sup>[4] <\/sup>The <strong>lion <\/strong>evokes the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:9), royalty, and power. It represents spiritual strength and divine protection. The <strong>censer <\/strong>refers to Temple worship and priestly function.<\/em><br><em><sup>[5]<\/sup> <strong>Fame <\/strong>(an angel blowing a trumpet) is a classical Greco\u2011Roman allegory of renown and glory. <strong>Profit <\/strong>(a man sowing seeds), an allegorical figure from the humanist tradition, embodies prosperity and fertility.<\/em><br><em><sup>[6] <\/sup>The presence of a complete <strong>zodiac <\/strong>(<\/em>\u05de\u05b7\u05d6\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea<em>, mazalot) symbolizes the cycle of time, cosmic order, and divine blessing upon married life. It also evokes providence and good fortune (<strong>\u05de\u05b7\u05d6\u05b8\u05bc\u05dc \u05d8\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1<\/strong><em> \u2013 <\/em><\/em><em>mazal tov), wished upon the couple.<\/em><br><em><sup>[7]<\/sup> <strong>Biblical verses <\/strong>on the ketubah: Genesis 27:28 \u201cMay God give you the dew of heaven\u2026\u201d, Proverbs 18:22 \u201cHe who finds a wife finds happiness\u2026\u201d, Proverbs 5:18 \u201cMay your fountain be blessed\u2026\u201d, along with a long passage from Isaiah 61:10\u201362:4, evoking nuptial joy and the restoration of Israel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vayigash (\u05d5\u05d9\u05d2\u05e9 \u2013 He Approached)Genesis 44:18\u201347:27 \u2013 Ezekiel 37:15\u201328 Judah offers his life to save Benjamin.
