The most valuable accounts of this conversion appear in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khazar_Correspondence\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Correspondance_khazare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hebrew correspondence<\/a><\/strong> between \u1e24asdai ibn Shaprut<sup>[2]<\/sup> and King Joseph of the Khazars<sup>[3]<\/sup>. In his letter, Joseph recounts his lineage, the conversion of his ancestor Bulan, the establishment of a state governed by Jewish rulers, the creation of religious institutions, the adoption of Torah law by the ruling dynasty, the administrative use of Hebrew, and the presence of an influential Jewish community at court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excavations at Sarkel \u2014 a name probably derived from the Turkic <em>\u0161ar<\/em> (white) and <em>kel\/kil<\/em> (fortress) \u2014 were conducted in the 1930s under Mikhail Artamonov<sup>[4]<\/sup>, before the site was submerged beneath the Tsimlyansk Reservoir. Archaeologists uncovered walls built of white limestone blocks, granaries and storehouses, and residential quarters. Some of the artifacts unearthed there \u2014 including a carved stone bearing a <em>menorah<\/em>, seals, and <em>tamgas<\/em> (emblems) \u2014 are preserved in the museum of Novochekassk, in the Rostov region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em><sup><strong>[1]<\/strong> <\/sup>Regarding <strong>conversion<\/strong>, the Talmud mentions <strong>ritual immersion<\/strong> (Yevamot 46a\u201347b) and a <strong>korban ger<\/strong>, a sacrifice offered at the Temple (Kritot 9a). For men, conversion also includes <strong>circumcision <\/strong>(brit milah or hatafat dam brit &#8211; Yevamot 46a). Maimonides specifies that the absence of the Temple does not prevent conversion (Issurei Bi\u2019ah 13:5).<\/em><br><em><strong><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/strong> <strong>\u1e24asdai ben Yitz\u1e25ak ben Ezra ibn Shaprut<\/strong> <\/em>(\u05d7\u05e1\u05d3\u05d0\u05d9 \u05d1\u05df \u05d9\u05e6\u05d7\u05e7 \u05d1\u05df \u05e2\u05d6\u05e8\u05d0 \u05d0\u05d1\u05df \u05e9\u05e4\u05e8\u05d5\u05d8)<em>, a 10th\u2011century Jewish diplomat, physician, and statesman at the Umayyad court of Cordoba, and protector of the Jewish communities of al\u2011Andalus.<\/em><br><em><strong><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/strong> <strong>Joseph, king of the Khazars<\/strong> in the 10th century. Besides his letter to \u1e24asdai, his reign is supported by the Schechter Letter (Cairo Geniza), by several Arab geographers of the 9th\u201310th centuries (al\u2011Mas\u02bf\u016bd\u012b, Ibn al\u2011Faq\u012bh, al\u2011Istakhr\u012b, Ibn \u1e24awqal), and by Byzantine chroniclers. He presents himself as a descendant of Bulan, followed by Obadiah, \u1e24izqiyah, Manasseh, \u1e24anukkah, Isaac, Zebulun, Moses, Nissi, Mena\u1e25em, Benjamin, and Aharon.
