In the Judean hills south of Jerusalem, this kibbutz was founded in 1927, destroyed\u202f<sup>[3]<\/sup> several times, and finally razed on 13 May 1948<sup>\u202f[4]<\/sup>, on the eve of the proclamation of the State of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the nineteen years of Jordanian occupation, the expelled families would climb the heights of Jerusalem, to the lookout point of Ramat Ra\u1e25el, from where they could glimpse in the distance the <strong>Oak of Gush Etzion<\/strong><sup>\u202f[5]<\/sup>. After the <strong>Six-Day War<\/strong>\u202f<sup>[6]<\/sup>, the descendants of the founders returned and rebuilt the kibbutz on its original site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <strong>Kfar Etzion<\/strong> is a religious Zionist kibbutz of about 1,200 residents. It hosts a <strong>mekhina<\/strong> (\u05de\u05db\u05d9\u05e0\u05d4)<sup>\u202f[7]<\/sup> among the most renowned in the country, a <strong>museum<\/strong> recounting the history of Gush Etzion, and various <strong>educational and tourist activities<\/strong>. The community also operates a <strong>guesthouse complex (zimmer)<\/strong> for visitors. Faithful to its agricultural vocation, the kibbutz cultivates <strong>apple orchards, cherry trees, vineyards, and almond groves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><sup>[1]<\/sup> The parasha read this Shabbat in the diaspora is <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hebdosyna.com\/site\/b7vq\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/hebdosyna.com\/site\/b7vq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shelakh Lekha<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<br><sup>[2]<\/sup> The name <strong><em>Etzion<\/em> <\/strong>was chosen in honor of Shmuel Zvi <strong>Holtzman <\/strong>(1883\u20131960), who acquired the land in the 1930s; the name plays on the German <em>Holz<\/em> (\u201cwood\u201d), linked to the Hebrew <em>etz<\/em> (\u05e2\u05e5), \u201ctree\/wood.\u201d<br><sup>[3]<\/sup> <strong>The four foundations of Kfar Etzion<\/strong>:<br>\u2014 <strong>1927\u20131929<\/strong> under the name <em>Migdal Eder<\/em> (\u05de\u05d2\u05d3\u05dc\u05be\u05e2\u05d3\u05e8), mentioned in Genesis 35:21; destroyed during the 1929 riots.<br>\u2014 <strong>1934\u20131936<\/strong>: the El HaHar company reestablishes the settlement; abandoned during the Arab Revolt.<br>\u2014 <strong>1943\u20131948<\/strong>: refounded by <em>Hapoel HaMizrachi<\/em> (est. 1922), committed to the ideal \u201cTorah and labor\u201d; on 13 May 1948, 127 defenders were massacred after surrendering, four prisoners survived.<br>\u2014 <strong>Since 25 September 1967<\/strong>: refounded by the descendants of the 1948 inhabitants.<br><sup>[5] <\/sup>The <strong>Oak of Gush Etzion<\/strong> is a centuries\u2011old tree (600\u2013700 years), visible from Jerusalem, and a symbol of the Gush Etzion region.<br><sup>[6]<\/sup> <strong>Arab coalition in the Six-Day War<\/strong>: Egypt, Jordan, and Syria (principal belligerents), Iraq (troops in Jordan), Saudi Arabia and Kuwait (contingents), with political or logistical support from Algeria, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia.<br><sup>[7]<\/sup> <em><strong>Mekhina<\/strong><\/em>: a religious and military preparatory academy for young Israelis before their service in the IDF; it combines Torah study, civic education, and physical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Qora\u1e25 (\u05e7\u05b9\u05e8\u05b7\u05d7)\u202f[1]Numbers 16:1\u201318:32 \u2022 1 Samuel 11:14\u201312:22 The ambitious Qora\u1e25 challenges the authority of Moshe and Aharon.
