The prophet Micah reminds us that God does not require outward rites or excessive sacrifices, but moral conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Numbers 24:5<\/strong><br><strong> \u05de\u05b7\u05d4\u05be\u05d8\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc \u05d0\u05b9\u05d4\u05b8\u05dc\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d9\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e7\u05b9\u05d1; \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05db\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b9\u05ea\u05b6\u05d9\u05da\u05b8 \u05d9\u05b4\u05e9\u05b0\u05c2\u05e8\u05b8\u05d0\u05b5\u05dc. <br><\/strong><em>\u201cHow good are your tents, Jacob \u2014 your dwellings, Israel.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Great Synagogue of Tren\u010d\u00edn <\/strong>has become beautiful once again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1913 by the architect <strong>Richard Scheibner<\/strong>\u202f<sup>[3]<\/sup> in the rare <strong>Byzantino\u2013Art Nouveau style<\/strong><sup>\u202f[4]<\/sup>, it is distinguished by a large central dome whose shape evokes a Mongolian yurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the period of the <strong>Slovak State<\/strong>\u202f<sup>[5]<\/sup>, an ally of the Reich during the Second World War, the Jewish community was deported and the synagogue stripped of its furnishings. Under the communist regime in Czechoslovakia, it served as a clothing warehouse, and was later whitewashed and converted into a cultural center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The synagogue was solemnly reopened in November 2025, following <strong>restoration<\/strong> <strong>work\u202f<\/strong><sup>[6] <\/sup>that restored its original colors. In addition to synagogue services, it now hosts exhibitions \u2014 including a permanent one on the history of the city\u2019s Jews \u2014 as well as concerts and lectures. In 2026, Tren\u010d\u00edn is a European Capital of Culture, and the synagogue is among the major sites of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><sup>[1]<\/sup> In the Diaspora, the weekly reading is <a href=\"https:\/\/hebdosyna.com\/site\/8a5p\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/hebdosyna.com\/site\/8a5p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Chukat\u2013Balak<\/strong><\/a> .<br><sup>[2]<\/sup> According to traditional identification (Targum, Rashi, Ibn Ezra), <strong>Pethor<\/strong> is located in the upper Euphrates valley, in northern Mesopotamia \u2014 corresponding today to northern Iraq, northeastern Syria, and southeastern Turkey. <br><sup>[3]<\/sup> <strong>Richard Scheibner<\/strong> (1880\u20131945), a Berlin\u2011based architect born in Pie\u0161\u0165any, Slovakia, designed the Tren\u010d\u00edn synagogue in 1912\u20131913, one of the very few religious buildings in his oeuvre. The project was carried out in collaboration with the Slovak architect <strong>Hugo P\u00e1l<\/strong> (1870\u20131932) and the local firm <strong>Fuchs &amp; Niegreisz<\/strong>. <br><sup>[4]<\/sup> The <strong>Byzantino\u2013Art Nouveau style<\/strong>, rare in Central Europe, combines Neo\u2011Byzantine elements (domes, arcades, oriental rhythms) with the flowing lines and floral motifs of Art Nouveau. <br><sup>[5]<\/sup> From 1939 to 1945, the <strong>Slovak State<\/strong> was a satellite of the Reich, led by Jozef Tiso (1887\u20131947), a Catholic priest and head of the Hlinka Slovak People\u2019s Party. His regime enacted antisemitic laws, organized the spoliation of Jewish property, and participated in the deportation of Slovak Jews. Tiso was condemned in 1947 for collaboration and crimes against humanity, and hanged. <br><sup>[6]<\/sup> The <strong>restoration work <\/strong>(2021\u20132025) was funded by the EEA\/Norway Grants, the Slovak State, and the Jewish community of Tren\u010d\u00edn. It was carried out by the Bratislava firm ARCHITEKTI B.K.P.\u0160, under the direction of Martin Kosi and Pavol Paniak.
